brochure says up to 2,280 lbs payload, the sticker on my door says 1,584. which one do i believe?

2023 Silverado 1500 RST crew cab 4x4, 5.3, 20 inch wheels, the sunroof, bought new. the brochure and every review said up to 2,280 lbs payload for a 1500. the yellow sticker on my door jamb says the combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed 1,584 lbs.

we are four adults and a dog going to the Black Hills with a 7,400 lb travel trailer that has about 900 on the tongue. by my math that is 900 plus roughly 700 of people plus a cooler and a generator in the bed, and i am over before the dog gets in. so which number is real, and if it is the sticker, what do people actually do about it?

the sticker. always the sticker. the brochure number is one truck, a regular cab 2 wheel drive work truck with the 2.7, vinyl seats and 17s, built with nothing on it. every option you add is weight that comes off the payload because the GVWR does not move. crew cab, 4x4, 20s, sunroof, the RST seats, each one takes 40 to 150 pounds. that is how a 2,280 truck becomes a 1,584 truck without anybody lying.

what you do about it. the sticker number is GVWR minus the truck as it left the factory with a full tank. anything you bolted on since, the tonneau, the running boards, the hitch itself, comes off that 1,584 too. then tongue weight, then people, then the cooler. the honest answer for four adults and a 7,400 trailer is you are 200 to 300 over on paper and the generator stays home, or the generator rides in the trailer where it counts against the trailer instead of the truck.

the trailering guide on chevrolet.com has payload by cab, box, engine and axle for every year, and it lists the RST crew 4x4 with the 5.3 a long way below the 2,280 headline. weigh it at a CAT scale, 14 bucks, before you leave. i spec 30 pickups a year for a fleet and i have never once ordered one off the brochure number.

horse people learn this one the hard way. my 19 F-150 sticker is 1,780. 2 horse bumper pull, loaded, is about 5,800 with 720 on the tongue. me, a friend, tack in the bed, the hay bag. scaled it at the truck stop on I-94 in Eau Claire: 90 pounds over on the rear axle rating, under on the total. moved the tack into the trailer's dressing room and it came in. 90 pounds is a saddle and two people's lunch. the sticker is not a suggestion, but it is not a cliff either, it is the number the tires and the rear axle were rated at.

2019 Tundra Limited crew, sticker says 1,435. every half ton is the same story, the badge says 1500 and the sticker says minivan. what nobody says out loud is the axle rating on the sticker matters more than the total. you can be under GVWR and over the rear axle with a heavy tongue and a bed full of firewood. read both lines.

scaled it at the co-op elevator in Mitchell this morning, they let me on for free. truck alone with me in it and a full tank, 5,720. hitched with the trailer loaded, everybody in, no generator: front axle 3,310, rear axle 4,120, truck total 7,430 against a 7,200 GVWR. so 230 over, and the rear axle is at 4,120 against a 4,100 rating. generator is going in the trailer's pass through, the cooler is going in the trailer, and i am ordering a weight distributing hitch. that gets the rear axle down, it does not fix the GVWR number, i understand that now.

that is the right read. the WD hitch moves some tongue back to the trailer axles and forward to your front, so the rear comes in under 4,100. GVWR is still 7,430 minus whatever you moved into the trailer, so get the generator and the cooler out of the bed and you are close enough that no scale house in South Dakota is going to bother a private pickup. the truck will not break at 100 over. what gets you at 300 over is the tires on a hot day in August, keep them at the sidewall number when loaded and check them at every fuel stop.
