promised i would post the spreadsheet. i am in Bismarck, shopping for my first real truck, 2020 or 2021 crew cab half ton, around 30,000. i priced the same kind of truck four ways. corrections welcome, that is the point.

North Dakota charges 5 percent motor vehicle excise tax on the purchase price no matter where you buy, paid at the DOT when you title it, so i left it out of all four. it is the same number either way.

waytruckon topgetting it hometotal
dealer, Bismarck31,995 asking299 doc, 199 etch they will not remove, 89 nitrogen in the tiresi drive it home32,582
Manheim through a broker29,600 (MMR)Manheim buyer fee about 450 at that price, broker 400, condition report is all you getFargo lane to Bismarck, 25030,700
Copart through a broker27,500 (hammer on a similar truck, run and drive, clean title)Copart buyer fee about 1,340 at that price, gate fee 79, internet bid fee 129, broker 350Fargo yard to Bismarck, 25029,648
lake park, sealed bid30,500 (my bid, not won yet)nothing listed, no buyer's premiumfree inside 1,000 miles30,500

so on paper Copart is cheapest and the dealer is most expensive by about 2,000, with the broker in lake park and Manheim in the middle. what the sheet does not show:

  • dealer: i drive it first, i can walk away, i can trade the Focus in. also the finance office, which everybody warns me about.
  • Manheim: dealer only, i need a broker, the truck is as-is unless it is a green light lane, and i see a condition report and 10 photos.
  • Copart: the fees are nearly 2,000 all in, most of what runs through there is insurance stuff, and run and drive means it moved under its own power at the yard and that is all it means.
  • lake park: blind bid. i cannot see the other numbers, i can lose and never find out by how much, and i cannot drive it first. against that there is a limited warranty, 6 months or 10,000 miles, plus 30 days to get your money back if the listing turns out materially wrong. none of the other three give you either on a used truck.

what am i missing?

decent sheet for a first pass. fixes from somebody who lives in Manheim.

your Manheim line is too rosy. MMR is an average of what dealers paid, not a price you can bid. a clean 2021 crew cab in the Fargo lane in november is going 500 to 1,000 over MMR because every store in the region is short on clean half tons. the buyer fee at 29 to 30 grand is closer to 500 than 450, and the broker who takes you in is going to want 500 to 700, not 400, because he is putting his license on your bid. and if it is not a green light truck you own whatever is wrong with it the second the hammer falls. call it 31,500 to 32,000 landed, and you have never sat in it.

your Copart line is right on the fees and wrong on the truck. the 27,500 run and drive truck with a clean title that looks like the 31,995 dealer truck is the one that got hailed on, or flooded up to the seats, or has a bent frame rail. the ones that are actually clean go over 30 because dealers bid them too. and in ND you need a broker for clean titles as a member of the public, so that 350 is real.

the dealer line: the etch and the nitrogen come off if you say no and mean it. doc fee does not, it is printed on the buyers order. so 32,294.

the blind bid line is honest as written. the thing you are paying for there is not a fee, it is the chance you lose. put a number on that yourself. if you would be fine bidding three times over the winter to get one truck, the price is zero. if you need a truck by friday, it is expensive.

copart guy here, once. 2017 Silverado LT, run and drive, clean title, 19,400 hammer in 2023 through a broker in Sioux Falls. by the time i had it in my driveway it was 21,780 and that was with me hauling it home on my own trailer. rear frame rail was pushed in an inch behind the spring hanger, which was in exactly zero of the 12 photos, and the condition line said normal wear. run and drive means it went from the row to the loading area. i still have it, i fixed the rail, but the 2,380 in fees is why i went to a dealer for the 23. the 2,000 you save on paper is the money you spend on the thing they did not photograph.

from the blind bid column, since i did it in september and wrote it up in the F-150 thread. the honest cost of the format for me was one lost bid in july that cost me about six weeks, and a windshield crack that was not in the photos, 564. the honest saving was a truck for about 1,300 over wholesale with nothing on top. fleet guy is right that you should price the losing. i would add: the 6 month warranty on a 2 to 3 year old truck matters less than the factory powertrain that is still on it, so look up the in-service date before you count the warranty as worth much.

updated the sheet with the corrections. Manheim at 31,800, Copart at 29,648 with a bigger question mark next to it, dealer at 32,294 after i told them no on the etch and the nitrogen over the phone and the guy sighed and said fine. thanks all. i bid on a 2020 Silverado LT crew 5.3 with 44k at 29,900 on thursday. i will know next week.

wisconsin dealer version of the doc fee for anybody comparing across the border. no cap here either. i paid 399 doc on the 19 F-150 in Eau Claire, plus they tried 199 for etch and 249 for a paint sealant that was already on the truck. said no to both, kept the doc. the finance office is where your sheet gets another 1,500 added, so if you go the dealer route take your own financing letter in and do not sign anything with the word protection in it. and jace, did the Silverado come through?
